Troubleshooting an Earth Fault on an ABB Drive

An ABB ACS580 kept tripping on fault 2330 (earth leakage). We measured the insulation section by section, found a damp wiring section and had the equipment running again the same day.

Troubleshooting an Earth Fault on an ABB Drive

CHALLENGE

Challenge

The site had several ABB ACS580 drives, and one of them kept tripping on fault 2330 (earth leakage). It tripped again shortly after every reset, so the equipment could not run normally.

SOLUTION

Solution

Starting from the fault code, we focused on earth leakage, measured the insulation resistance of the motor and cables separately and isolated them section by section until we found the damp wiring section. After repairing it we retested and used a clamp meter to confirm that the three-phase output currents were balanced.

EQUIPMENT

Equipment and Technology

  • ABB ACS580 drive
  • Insulation resistance tester
  • Clamp meter
  • Motor and cable inspection

RESULTS

Results

  • Fault code analysis
  • Leakage point found by isolating sections
  • Back in operation the same day

The fault was cleared and the equipment was back in operation the same day. We also advised the customer to measure insulation regularly so that deterioration can be caught early.
